Who should attend?

  • This course provides a better understanding of the "how" and "why" of measurements, their use for development and calibration of spark ignition and diesel engines.
  • To know the fundamentals, the limitations and the results that can be expected from different measuring devices used on engine or vehicle benches. To identify and calculate the measurement uncertainties.

  • Engineers and technical staff making or using engine measurements in order to improve measurements, calibration process, engine tuning, risks of wrong results interpretation and interested in learning engine operating parameters behavior.

Course Content

  • Introduction to the engine tuning & calibration

      • Different benefits to consider: basic settings, performance, cold operation, depollution/standards to be met, particulate filter regeneration, OBD diagnostics. Impact of drifts and dispersions, ambient conditions. The engine operating points. Main parameters of engine tuning.

  • Stationary engine dyno test bench measurements

      • Tests carried out on stationary engine dyno test benches. Driving and monitoring system of an automated test bench.
      • Slow measurements.
      • Instantaneous measurements. Virtual engine test bench tour.

  • Engine test bench measurements analysis

      • Validation process of a test by results analysis, comparison with the expected results.
      • How to determine the reasons of a non-validation.

  • Special vehicle test bench

      • Equipment, instrumentation, measurements goals from the tuning point of view: climatic room, actuation bench, evaporation room, altimeter bench, aero-climate bench, tests on track, on cycles, in extreme conditions, customer requirements, virtual bench tour.

  • Measurements of non regulated pollutants & of particles granulometry

      • Measurements of non regulated pollutants (NrP): HC, aldehydes, NH3, HAP.
      • Particles granulometry: electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI), Scanning Mobility Particle Sizing (SMPS); difficulties to interpret the measurements results; dynamic mass measurements (TEOM, Micro Soot Sensor).

  • Sampling methods with engine dyno & roller test benches

      • Hot or cold samples, wet or dry gas analysis. Constant flow dilution system (constant volume sampling). Full or partial flow systems, advantages and drawbacks.

  • Classical methods of gaseous pollutants & particles measurements

      • Nitrogen monoxide and dioxide measurement with infrared absorbing detector. Nitrogen oxides measurements with chemico-luminescence. Oxygen measurement with paramagnetic detector. Unburnt hydrocarbons measurement with flame ionization detector.
      • Particles measurement with gravimetric method, smoke meter, opacity meter.

  • Gas analysis by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) & ultraviolet (FTUV)

      • Measurement principle, use of spectrometer, analyzed gas.
      • Advantages compared with other methods: response time, wet hot gas sampling, lack of calibration with titer gas, results obtained.

  • Numerical methods for engine tuning & calibrations

      • Definition of the cycle operating points. Engine parameters impact on tuning methodologies and numerical approach. Definition of DoE: choices of operating points, parameters, measures and measuring instruments. Numerical models identification. Optimization of the calibration according to requirements (consumption, emissions, noise, approval, performance). Optimization methodologies.

  • Virtual spark ignition engine test bench

      • The proposed simulator is a virtual spark ignition engine test bench on which virtual testing will be conducted by varying the parameters to show their impact. Many measurements are performed on the engine.
      • Simulator, characterization of full load operation and constant speed: optimal advance determination; power curve and maximum torque characteristics, specific fuel consumption, engine air load analysis; impact of test conditions (temperature and atmospheric pressure) on engine performances; spark advance analysis, CA50, ESC, ISC, engine performances, burning time evolution, initiation time, exhaust temperature evolution, …
      • Variable distribution interest: Miller and Atkinson cycle at partial load; performance gain, ESC and pollutants; full load and partial load performances; torque characteristic analysis with an engine dynamometer.

  • Virtual diesel engine test bench

      • Simulator, characterization of a full load engine: determination of optimal settings, power and torque curve development, specific fuel consumption, air load analysis; test conditions impact on engine performances.
      • Simulator, engine cycle operating points characterization: main parameters (injection pattern, rail pressure, EGR rate, boost pressure); analyzes on CA50, ESC, ISC, engine performance, emissions, combustion noise.

Learning Objectives

  • Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • know the fundamentals of engines’ tuning, calibration and associated tests,
  • know the types of measurements and means necessary for calibration,
  • understand the structures of the different engine test bench types, how to drive and monitor them, in relation with the engine control system,
  • use the classical gas sampling and analyses,
  • identify dysfunctions (engine or bench) to avoid misinterpretation,
  • practice a virtual diesel engine test bench: to conduct fundamental tuning, to measure main operating parameters, to analyze measurements and optimize calibrations,
  • understand main engine parameters behavior.

  • This training combines theoretical knowledge and know-how applied to numerical simulator using spark ignition and diesel engines test benches.
  • The participant can directly visualize the influence of each parameter and devices.
  • The participant can experience the “how” and “why” of engine measurements to better understand tuning methodologies.
  • Real case studies with numeric simulation.
  • Examples of heat balance and test development from real cases.
