Course Content

  • BLOCK DIAGRAM OF THE STEAMCRACKER

      • Roles of the various sections: hot and cold sections, compression.
      • Feedstock origins, products types, yields.
      • Consequences of the column feedstock.
  • SEPARATION PROCESSES

      • Distillation, stripping and physico-chemical absorption. Common principle and main differences.
      • Operating parameters of a column with two products. Base of control, adaptation to the implemented regulation in the columns of the cold train.
      • Operating parameters of the various strippers and the column of wash.
      • Operating parameters of the column of absorption of acid gases.
      • Extractive distillation of C2 and C4 cuts: principle.
      • Operating parameters, base of control, adaptation of the operation to the implemented regulation.
      • Adsorption: principle.
      • Operating parameters, operation of the various dryers.
  • SPECIFIC CASE OF COLUMNS IN THE HOT ZONE

      • Primary fractionation column.
      • Influence of the compounds present in the feedstock.
      • Concentration profiles in the tower, possibilities of associated draw off, possible pumparounds, consequences on the operation.
      • Water quenching tower.
      • Role, behavior of a water-hydrocarbon mixture (immiscibility in the liquid state and specificities of the liquid-vapor equilibrium); Column driving and influence of the head temperature on the operation of the cracked gases compressor.
  • DISTURBANCES - INCIDENTS

      • Disturbances: shutdown of the furnace, loss of the quench circuit, loss of the flowrate in the quenching water circuit.
      • Cracked gas scrubbing incidents.
      • Failed regeneration of dryers.

Learning Objectives

  • Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
  • describe the circuits and the operation of the primary fractionation tower, water cooling tower quenching, the washing and drying system of cracked gases,
  • explain the impact of operating parameters of these plants through the main regulation systems,
  • adjust the tuning of the unit to the normal operation and to the upsets linked to the regulation system.
