  • This course is designed for engineers who are newly involved in project activities and who are in need of a global understanding of upstream projects.
  • This certification allows participants to acquire the necessary knowledge to manage projects, from the initial stage to completion. The course aims to provide a thorough understanding of the structure and management of the execution of project phases as well as the techniques & know-how needed to successfully manage upstream projects.
Learning Objectives
  • Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • grasp Oil & Gas activities, vocabulary, economy,
  • conduct the preliminary stages: concept, feasibility, economics (notion), FEED,
  • appraise project planning: schedule, costs, execution plan,
  • strengthen HSE in project design and construction,
  • choose within the various contract types,
  • manage pre-construction phases: basics, calls for tenders, etc.,
  • manage construction phases: engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent experience within the Oil & Gas industry.
Ways and means
  • Each step of the course is illustrated by numerous examples, drawings, photos and videos taken from actual Oil & Gas activities.
  • Exercises are proposed to participants for each module of the course and may represent more than 50% of the time.
The course content may be customized or modified upon request. The durations serve as a reference and may vary depending on course organization, knowledge of the group of trainees and the client’s request. Additional courses on offshore may replace certain modules. Unconventional projects (part 2) may be replaced by classic field, E&P projects economics. The group project (part 12) is a selection of 1 of 3 subjects: onshore, offshore and deep offshore.

Part 1: E&P technologies overview 5 days
  • Geosciences. Drilling and well completion. Field processing, surface facilities, field development and decision making process. E&P challenges and new technologies.
Part 2: Unconventional projects - E&P Projects Economics 5 days
  • Contribution of unconventional hydrocarbons to the global scene. Unconventional upstream steps, technics & costs. Upstream economic and contractual framework, economic analysis & investment decision. Environmental impact & issues.
Part 3: Process 5 days
  • Piping & valves. Main equipment. Metallurgy, corrosion, fundamentals of inspection. Schematization.
Part 4: Logistics 5 days
  • Logistic. Base management & warehouse management. Transportation issues.
Part 5a: Engineering management 3 days
  • Gaining a deep understanding of engineering. Engineering discipline overview. Keys to a successful engineering execution.
Part 5b: Quality assurance & risks in projects 2 days
  • Quality management system, process and organization. Quality control during execution, feedback and continuous improvement. Risk management system.
Part 6a: Construction techniques 3 days
  • Construction techniques.
Part 6b: HSE in construction activities 2 days
  • Safety risk management on the field, HSE.
Part 7: Pre-commissioning - Commissioning 5 days
  • Presentation of Precom/Com in project activities. Precommissioning: mechanical completion, commissioning activities. Start-up.
Part 8: Planning & schedule 5 days
  • Project state gate process. Building/optimizing the schedule. Onshore case study using MS project and offshore case study using primavera.
Part 9: Project control techniques 5 days
  • General project organization and control. Planning. Estimation & cost control. Information management.
Part 10: Contracts 5 days
  • Introduction, contracting strategy. Call for tender procedures. EPC contract content and core articles, exhibits, contract, liability and insurance. Procurement, expediting, stock management, transportation, customs. Contract administration.
Part 11: Project management 5 days
  • Introduction and preliminary studies. Feed or basic engineering. Project control and administration. HSE and quality management. Detail engineering and procurement. Construction.
Part 12: Group exercise or project 10 days
