  • Production operators and field operations personnel looking for comprehensive technical information on production chemicals use and handling.
Purpose
  • This course provides, through a comprehensive training, an advanced knowledge on the use of the most frequently used chemicals encountered in Oil & Gas production from safety aspects, purpose, handling to treatment monitoring.
Learning Objectives
  • Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • know where and why chemicals are used,
  • know the purpose of each production chemical, its specificity and limits,
  • apply the best treating chemicals safely,
  • calculate chemical dosages,
  • adjust injection pumps and check the flow rates,
  • trouble shoot a chemical pump skid,
  • monitor chemical treatments and report dysfunctions.

Introduction to chemical treatments in production field 0.5 day
  • Different types of chemicals used in Oil & Gas production.
  • Delivery containers: illustration of the different types of containers received on the field, the pros and the cons of each model.
  • Material safety data sheet: What they are for? Where to find them? How to keep them current?
Safety applied to chemicals handling 0.5 day
  • Nature of dangers.
  • Safety pictograms.
  • Specific Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Handling, storage, transfer, housekeeping: on site hauling, lifting, rules of efficient storage (FIFO), tank refill methods (pouring, pumping), cleaning involved.
Calculation of dosing rates 0.25 day
  • What is a ppm?
  • Mixing, dilution of chemicals: When is it needed? How to safely implement it? How to get the mixture homogeneous?
  • How to adjust the chemical injection rate to get the proper dosage?
  • Exercises: calculate flowrates vs. ppm on different cases (continuous, batches).
Chemical feed system 0.5 day
  • Components review (tank, pumps, flowmeters, piping, quills).
  • Application: design a pump skid from spare elements.
  • Application: reading of pump setting gauge and calculation of flow rates in different ways.
  • Troubleshooting.
  • Application: write up a pump skid operating procedure.
  • Injection rates monitoring: follow up, cross checking chemical consumptions, calculation of daily injection rates for different tank shapes, reconciliation of stocks.
Chemicals for oil treatment 1.5 days
  • Purpose, specificities, monitoring of each: demulsifiers, defoamers, corrosion inhibitors, paraffin control chemicals, oil slick dispersants, …
Chemicals for gas treatment 0.75 day
  • Purpose, specificities, monitoring of each: defoamers, corrosion inhibitors, hydrate inhibitors (Methanol, DEG, TEG, KHI), …
Chemicals for water treatment 0.5 day
  • Purpose, specificities, monitoring of each: deoilers, corrosion inhibitors, acids, additives, …
Special operations 0.5 day
  • Batch treatments: corrosion inhibitors, bactericides, paraffin solvents.
  • Acid cleanings: electrochlorinator, heat exchangers.
  • Solvent cleaning.
